Fashion week features neutral, comfortable styles for spring

Ah, the wonder that is New York Fashion Week. It’s the time of year when all the best of the best models, designers, editors, bloggers and photographers fill up the concrete jungle with their stylish wardrobes and run from one venue to the next, all while wearing their latest Calvin Klein see-through heels.

Thank goodness tennis shoes and Birkenstocks are coming back in style.

With over 250 shows at this year’s event, it is difficult to narrow down common trends and styles for the new year. According to the Huffington Post, the latest trends aren’t difficult to find or pull off, which is the best news that someone who watches the fashion show live streams from the comfort of her own bed can hear.

This list of common sightings at this year’s New York Fashion Week include J. Crew’s polo shirts, Marc Jacobs’ parkas, Diane von Furstenberg’s gingham dresses, as well as Jason Wu’s suede separates.  These were all in shows at least three different times which, according to Harpers Bazaar, is the qualifying number for something to become a trend.

The semiannual event of the year is not only about clothes; it’s about being the best and the most creative and having everyone know it.

A common thing designers do is invite their celebrity friends to sit on the front row, otherwise known as “frow.” The more celebrities they have, the more popular their event is.

Smart move, designers. Smart move.

But they don’t always just let them sit and watch. Jeremy Scott, designer for Moschino, had Miley Cyrus walk down the runway with him, a choice that obviously made Instagram’s “most viewed” list.

Along with celebrity sightings, designers have to make their after-parties as crazy or crazier than the show itself, so why not invite the biggest names in music to perform?

According to The New York Times, artists from Iggy Azalea to St. Vincent made “social media platforms seem more like an MTV Top-10 video roundup rather than a Fashion Week Feed.”

And the good news is, the fashion show season doesn’t end with New York Fashion Week. London Fashion Week was Friday, Sept. 12-16, and Milan, Paris, and Berlin Fashion Weeks are waiting right around the corner.
