Conversation desired on Hilltop Views website

Students should comment on our website to open a dialogue.

Every week the editorial board reflects on a current issue in Our View. The position taken does not reflect the opinions of everyone on the Hilltop Views staff.

Visit any news site, whether it be The New York Times, Washington Post or even The Daily Texan, they all have some form of active participation from readers through comments. Now take a look at our website, and that participation is nonexistent.

We would like to see that changed. We encourage readers to reach out to us, and tell us what they think about Hilltop Views, our stories and reporting.

There needs to be some sort of interaction between the newspaper and its readers. This interaction will give editors a way to tailor stories to readers’ tastes. We would be able to produce content you want to read every week.

In order for this to even happen readers must get online and talk to us. It’s very easy. All a person has to do to post a comment is login through Facebook, type their response and like magic the comment will appear.

An even easier way to interact with Hilltop Views is through Twitter. If you have a question or comment about a story, look for the writer’s Twitter handle on our website or print edition and tweet at them.

Of course, we expect comments to be conducted in a civilized manner, and our writers, if they decide to respond, will also conduct themselves to the highest standards.

No one would like to see our comments turn into hatred and vitriol.

Having readers comment on stories will help our reporters possibly find new angles and sources to use.

Comments will hopefully facilitate more stories. Sometimes we miss stories that should be covered, but readers could help us find them.

No longer would Hilltop Views be a one-way avenue, where we produce content and people read it. Comments would create a dialogue, and give stories life beyond paper and ink or pixels on a screen. It would give stories the momentum they sometimes need to make an impact.

If our readers and us can unite and join forces, we could change St. Edward’s University for the better.

We would be able to hold wrongdoers accountable for their actions and also be able to praise those doing great things on our campus.

Together we would become an unstoppable force.
