Waffle Houze serves EP
Suburban hip-hop has never had a whole lot going for it, but Dem Waffle Houze Boiz are doing their best to change that. Dem Waffle Houze Boiz are a group of three aspiring rappers hailing from Cypress, Texas including St. Edward’s freshman Travis Riddle.
The groups most recent EP, “Free Money 2: The Deuce,” explores several different hip-hop sub genres ranging from the old school De La Soul sounding track “Chicken N Wafflez” to raw Wu Tang Clan style east coast hip hop on the song “Somethin’ Illegal.” Dem Waffle Houze Boiz even channel their inner R&B singers on the Drake-esque song “Free Money.”
The production value of the EP is stellar. Most of the beats sound on par with music you could hear on the radio today, but a few of the vocal tracks leave you wanting more. Still, for a local rap group, Dem Waffle Houze Boiz’s sound is above most of their peers.
The best part about “Free Money 2: The Deuce” is the EP’s hilarious lyrics. Content wise it should come as no real surprise that Dem Waffle Houze Boiz focus on typical rap subjects on the EP: getting and spending money, harassing women, and stealing cars.
The group does however manage to work in a lot of funny references and allusions into their rhymes. In the opening track “We’re Back” the group rhymes about a character from Dexter, Regis Philbin, Seinfeld, the 90’s dinosaur movie “We’re Back,” Conan O’Brien, and Jeopardy. Then even spend four lines rapping about comedian David Cross and TV Show “Arrested Development.”
The group spends at least a third of the EP explaining and celebrating their love for the breakfast establishment from which they took their name. The tracks “Chicken N Wafflez” and “All you need” are especially Waffle House heavy, detailing the guys’ love for the restaurant and even shouting out to one lucky “Waffle Heezy” waitress.
Overall “Free Money 2: The Deuce” isn’t a classic, but Dem Waffle Houze Boyz’s 6 song EP is full of fun and hilarious rhymes that fans of rap will have a good time with.
