Album crosses language barriers

Just a year after the release of “She Wolf,” Shakira is back with a brand new concept and a new Spanish album.

The album is called “Sale El Sol” and it is the platform in which the Colombian singer/songwriter displays her many reincarnations and quirky musical schizophrenia. It is in all aspects a bilingual album, featuring songs performed and written fully in Spanish and in English while also blending the two languages in single tracks.

The album is also one for Shakira’s ears. Upon listening to the 15-track endeavor one has no doubts that she made this album to satisfy her own heart.

This does not make the album a bland self-indulgent struggle; on the contrary, it makes it an enjoyable journey the listener will never forget. From the mid-tempo rock opener “Sale El Sol” to a rock/dance version of her hit “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)” the album never disappoints.

In this record she synthesizes 20 years of her career and features three distinctive branches of sound: Latin/dance, piano-driven rock ballads, and fast-tempo rock.

Shakira evokes her Latino roots with the help of Puerto Rican group Calle 13 and Dominican Republic’s El Cata. In the mad single “Loca” and the urban/middle-eastern song “Gordita” (think of the songs as this year’s “Hips Don’t Lie” and “La Tortura”) she surpasses Latino-crossover expectations.

On the second branch of this eclectic effort, the singer portrays the introspective and vulnerable characteristics that made her famous in Latin America. In “Antes De Las Seis” and “Lo Que Mas” the Colombian shines with raw emotion and outstanding vocals.

On the third and final branch, which is displayed throughout the album, she evokes her rock roots with the help of Argentinean recording artist Gustavo Cerati. In songs like “Tu Boca” and “Devocion” Shakira unleashes her insatiably thirsty and raw rock star. She manages to fuse her innate quirk with a post-punk sound, sure to make The Clash admire.

She also covers British band The XX’s acclaimed single “Islands,” bringing it to new heights the original could only dream of.

“Sale El Sol” was released on Oct. 19 in the U.S. and includes three bonus tracks: the English versions of “Loca,” “Rabiosa” and “Waka Waka (This Time For Africa).”
