New album, best quality

Of Montreal’s newest album “False Priest” is another example of the band’s ability to create contagious, pop-filled experiences. The band’s music is best described as a mix of indie pop and psychedelic with a little bit of funk. Kevin Barnes, the leading man of the group, has exceeded any expectations by improving his signature sound. The album has an amazing flow, with one song seamlessly transitioning into the next. Their tenth album is nothing less than a bizarre and wonderful ride.

Of Montreal is known for their strange, sometimes gloomy lyrics set to fun melodies. The album opens up brilliantly with the upbeat and entertaining song “I Feel Ya’ Strutter.” “False Priest” continues to gradually blossom from the song “Our Riotous Defects,” with the hilarious story about a crazy ex-girlfriend, to “Like a Tourist,” with the great line, “I want somebody to frisk me/ I want this night to distort me.” Barnes questions religion in the nearly seven-minute closer song “You Do Mutilate?” This album is an excellent example of Of Montreal’s ability to astonish fans with their shocking lyrics and creativity.

With the help of new producer Jon Brion, “False Priest” captures the full effect of the band’s significance. The massive improvement in the audio quality that Brion brought allows the album a new sound that better represents the band’s extravagant and energetic live shows. The album also features Janelle Monae and Solange Knowles, which help to add some glamour and a little bit of R&B to the album.

“False Priest” is packed full with catchy dance songs, making it an incredibly enjoyable album to listen to. It has everything to offer, with songs about sex, drugs, religion and love found and lost.

Of Montreal has been a tribute to the indie rock/pop genre for nearly 15 years and has come a long way since 1997’s “Cherry Peel.” Their newest album “False Priest” is no exception to their outstanding reputation.
