Givers generous with SEU crowd

Givers

Givers, a six-member band from Lafayette, La., is surprisingly popular for a group that only has one album out: a five-song EP, on which the last song is a remix of the first. But maybe they’re popular because they’re awesome.

Givers are one of those bands that when you listen to the album, you think, “Man, I bet they’d be good live,” but you have no idea what is in store for you. Givers are made of energy. To illustrate the point, the lead singer and guitarist, Taylor Guarisco, broke his ankle at their last show and was still up on stage with his big black boot on, hopping and dancing around like nobody’s business.

Givers’ music is poppy with a lo-fi twist and a healthy supply of what are technically known as “phat beats.” Almost all of the members provide vocals, and swelling “oohs” and “aahs” are decidedly augmented by the layered harmonies.

The two main vocalists, Guarisco and Tiffany Lamson, are a dynamic duo whose stage power perfectly magnifies the explosive energy of the rest of the band.

The rest of the band consists of a barefoot drummer, a bassist who dances like Jim Carrey, a more stoic but smiling keyboardist and a new keyboardist with a beautiful voice. Speaking of voices, Lamson can tear up a microphone like she’s on the main stage at Woodstock. She can also (figuratively) destroy a drum set and (literally) destroy a tambourine.

Guarisco sings with his tongue almost hanging out of his wide, happy mouth, like a puppy or Miyazaki’s Totoro. The best word to describe Givers would be fun, perhaps even goofy. Actually, they are decidedly goofy, and their energy, obvious joy and spontaneity create an atmosphere in which an audience can’t help but have a rollicking good time.

Givers even impromptu beatboxed; Lamson provided the beats and Guarisco broke out some sick flow. At the beginning of the performance, everyone was standing around, bouncing or bobbing their heads a little, but by the end, the crowd was moving and dancing like you’d never have expected.

Givers will be playing at Austin City Limits Music Festival and have a new album scheduled for release at the end of the year.
