A cloud of uncertainty stands between the St. Edward’s University president and his return to the United States.

That cloud is the volcanic ash from the eruptions of Mt. Eyjafjallajokull in Iceland. As of Wednesday morning, the ash is keeping President George Martin grounded in Scotland.

He is currently looking to board another flight.

“He was scheduled to come back [Tuesday], but his flight was canceled,” university spokeswoman Mischelle Diaz said. “It looks like he may be able to get back [Wednesday].”

Martin was wrapping up his trip overseas after attending an alumni event in Bahrain and visiting a St. Edward’s partner school, Queen Margaret University, in Scotland.

Most air travel had been banned after the initial eruptions, but European transport ministers began to ease restrictions Tuesday

UPDATE: Martin was able to catch a flight back out of Scotland. He returned to Austin late Wednesday night and was back at work on campus Thursday.

“It was challenging, but I got back on time,” Martin said.
