Concert Review: MSTRKRFT at Republic Live
Toronto-based group MSTRKRFT delivered a night of loud music and thumping dance beats at a recent Republic Live show.
The duo, consisting of Jesse F. Keeler and Alex “Al-P” Puodziukas, was accompanied by DJ Orion and King Louie.
The event, which spanned a good three hours, lacked a show-like atmosphere. Instead, the ambiance was more rave-like. Attendees pushed, shoved and danced their way through with little pauses in between. For many, the whole occurrence was eventful but some found it lacking something.
The Oct. 30 show began with DJ Orion and King Louie spinning on the turntables. They played for a rather long time. It even appeared as though they outlasted MSTRKRFT.
“The opening act was okay,” freshman Doris Gutierrez said. “They played for a longer time than I expected. I really just wanted to see MSTRKRFT.”
Once the opening duo finished their set, it was time for MSTRKRFT to take the stage. They did so without any hesitation and continued spinning jams. The crowd stopped to shout and holler in applause but quickly resumed dancing.
Many, though, could not shake the feeling that MSTRKRFT did not live up to their name and reputation.
In a sense, the band shied away from playing songs that made them so well liked and respected. Instead, they stuck playing dance tunes which all sounded a bit similar to one another.
The end of the show stopped rather abruptly. There was no encore. However, music kept on playing and people kept on dancing until slowly the venue began to empty out and attendees spilled onto the downtown streets.
Although the show was not a complete bust, it failed to live up to many fans’ expectations.
“It was definitely an interesting experience,” Gutierrez said. “The show was a little overwhelming, but I am still glad that I went.”
