‘Quick Fix’ solution aims to solve student’s registration issues
It’s that time of the semester again — registration for next year’s classes. And if you’ve had issues In the past when trying to register at 8 a.m., there’s now a fix for that.
Student Academic Support Services organized a new event this semester: Registration Quick Fix. The department launched the program to heighten awareness of the upcoming registration and assist students with the registration process, Academic Counselor Erin Ray said.
Every department involved with registration will attend the Quick Fix, so students will have all the resources they need in one place. Academic and technical support will be available if a student experiences unexpected registration holds or has technical difficulties or general questions. Support for international students and students planning to study abroad will also be available.
“If some kind of issue arises for you, then it means you have to take steps all over campus to resolve those
issues before you can then get back to your computer and sit down and register for classes,” Ray said. “We thought we would find a way to have a single destination for students if they run into something they don’t know how to fix.”
Some of the departments that will be available for academic and technical support include Student Financial Services, the Registrar’s Office, Office of Information Technology, Academic Counseling and Exploration and the Global Engagement Office. In addition, representatives from every school will be on-site to offer assistance.
“I think everyone’s concern is students getting back to campus [in the fall], not having what they need and then you have to scramble to get into the class,” Trevino said.
The event was not planned in response to any past registration issues, but to raise awareness that registration is happening, said Associate Vice President for Student Academic Support Services Nicole Trevino.
“Some students might think about [registration] well in advance, while others it’s like ‘oh no, today is registration, I was supposed to get advised. Oh no, I have a financial hold, I need to go run and take care of it’,” Trevino said.
The Quick Fix will help students avoid that issue and also help students who aren’t familiar with myHilltop, Ray said.
“Students use myHilltop to register for classes twice a year, and that means it’s not a form of technology students are as familiar with, as Canvas or Zimbra,” Ray said.
The Registration Quick Fix will be in the Moody Hall Atrium from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on April 5-7 and on April 10. Coffee, snacks and prizes will also be given away. Students not on campus can call Academic Counseling at (512)-448-8660.
This is the first time this registration event is taking place, and the hope is to continue doing it for future semesters, Ray said.
“We just really want students to know that they’ve got a lot of support and that to the best of our ability we’re here to help them,” she said.
