‘Icarus Falls’: A journey through triumphs, misadventures of love
Over two years after the release of his debut album “Mind of Mine,” Zayn has stepped back into the spotlight with his sophomore album “Icarus Falls.” Released at the end of 2018, the album features 27 songs which follow a narrative of the highs and lows of various relationships.
While Zayn has solidified his signature pop/R&B sound, he made sure to change things up with EDM inspired beats and the occasional distorted electric guitar. The album features other A-List artists such as Nicki Minaj on “No Candle No Light” and Timbaland on “Too Much.” Zayn also collaborated with some big names behind the scenes such as Grammy award winner Malay Ho (who also produces music for Frank Ocean), Alicia Keys and John Legend.
The album is divided into two sections. The first, “Icarus,” follows the growth of important relationships in Zayn’s life, then following an interlude, we listen as many of these relationships break apart in “Falls.”
Throughout the album, Zayn tackles subjects such as light as finding the love of your life in “Let Me,” and having someone who’s always there for you in “There You Are,” to topics as heavy as substance abuse in “Back to Life,” toxic relationships in “Fresh Air” and infidelity in “Rainberry.” With such variety in the life experiences Zayn shares with the listener, there really is a song for everyone on this album.
“Icarus Falls” is a vocal, musical, and lyrical masterpiece with each song building upon the next. Whether you’re in love, out of love or just lovesick, this album will bring a little extra joy into your life.
