Taking over the field after women’s soccer on Oct. 21, the St Edward’s men’s soccer team fell short after the Texas A&M International University Dust Devils scored two goals in the second half.
The Hilltoppers started the first half showcasing their aggressiveness, creating a couple chances in the first 10 minutes with freshman forward Bartek Zabek and freshman midfielder Matthew Devaney, but both were unable to capitalize. The Dust Devils answered with just as much intensity with several fouls coming from their side.
During the first half, the Hilltoppers created double the shots, but neither team was able to finish their chances, going to halftime with a scoreless draw.
The second half started with several substitutions on both sides and several fouls. The Dust Devils were looking for chances to take the lead. Fifteen minutes in, they capitalized as the ball found its way in between graduate student and goalkeeper Kellen Gullion’s hands. Less than five minutes later, the Dust Devils took advantage of Gullion’s distance from the goal to score once more, bringing the score to 2-0.
Two shots on goal were made by the Hilltoppers in attempts to even the score, coming from freshmen strikers Leo Pedrozo and Jethro Vourjolo, but both shots were blocked by the Dust Devils’ goalkeeper. The Hilltoppers finished the game scoreless.
“Hopefully we can be consistent,” Head Coach Brian Young said. “Today we just couldn’t finish, in all of our chances we didn’t score, but we are in good spots.”
The Hilltoppers go on to the next game with a 0-8-5 record and a 0-3-3 in the Lone Star Conference. With three games left in the season, St. Edward’s men’s soccer goes on the road to face Midwestern State University on Oct. 25, coming back to the last home game on Homecoming weekend.
