The St. Edward’s women’s basketball team fell to Angelo State University 80-72 on Saturday afternoon, snapping its three-game win streak. The Hilltoppers’ wins over Oklahoma Christian, Cameron and The University of Texas Permian Basin have pulled themselves into the Lone Star Conference playoff picture.
It was back-and-forth all game long between the Rambelles and Hilltoppers, separated by one point, 18-17, after the first quarter. It was a bittersweet homecoming for Rambelle guard Lauren Catherman, who graduated last year from St. Edward’s and left the program with the third most steals all-time, with 204.
Sophomore Bailey Featherstone found her groove from midrange, leading the Hilltoppers with 10 first half points. Junior Jasmyn Jackson gave her team a boost off the bench with eight points and three rebounds. St. Edward’s led 43-41 at halftime.
“Jaz is getting more and more confident and at ease in what we ask her to do,” St. Edward’s head coach J.J. Riehl said. “She gave us big minutes, and she was really good.”
Just how she started the first quarter, sophomore Ramsey Robledo sparked the Hilltoppers in the third quarter, knocking down a three pointer to start the second half.

On the ensuing possession, junior Kiana Bennett, followed with a triple of her own as part of a 15-5 Hilltopper run midway through the third quarter. The Hilltoppers were in control, up 58-46 at the 4:08 media timeout in the third, when the game dramatically flipped.
Angelo State forward Madeline Stephens generated a 12-0 run by herself to bring Rambelles within five, down 61-56 heading to the fourth quarter.
The Rambelles pushed the pace following a missed lay-up by Hilltopper guard JP Perkins and Angelo State took the 69-68 lead and sailed to an 80-72 victory.
“We just didn’t make the plays,” Riehl said. “We didn’t have the poise and the confidence down the stretch and they did.”
The Hilltoppers will be back in action next week on a South Texas road trip to face off against Texas A&M – Kingsville on Jan. 30 and Texas A&M International on Feb. 1.
