Psychedelic group Ronjo V projected to be Austin’s next hit band
We all know Austin produces a lot of bands — but they tend to get lost in the sea of indie/metal/wanna-be-Arctic-Monkeys sound. Ronjo V stands out from the crowd with a clever name and a sound as soothing as Tame Impala or Minus the Bear.
Their sound is a mixture of both, with their vocals encapsulating the stars of the universe and their music carrying them through the sky. Their EP, which is available on Spotify, is a psychedelic experience.
Ryan Joseph and Michael Keith Morgan are the only two members of the band, but that does not hold them back from creating a polished sound. It is no surprise that Morgan and Joseph have their own recording studio, 5th Street Records, because of how nicely this EP is produced. Together, in December 2015, they created Major Label Records. Major Label Records intends to showcase local artists in the Austin area. Currently, their only other artist signed is Bop English.
On their facebook, they describe their music as “a haunting yet stoic examination of the world.”
“Ronjovism” is their breakout EP. One of their songs, “Caught,” has the dramatic yet peaceful sound of rain falling, contributing to their goal of “examining the world”.
My favorite, “Unfriend,” is an acoustic with nostalgic lyrics sang in a voice that makes his pain become your pain too. Most of the songs on the album use classic alternative instruments like keyboard, drums, bass and guitar. They do not go overboard with their instrumentals or vocal effects like some other indie-rock bands tend to (shout out to Ty Segall).
Even their music videos for “Dying Wish” and “Slo Motion” are artistic and thought-provoking. They provide a perfect background for raw songs dripping with sentiment.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see this duo become Austin’s next big band, following in the footsteps of Austin’s other favorites, such as White Denim and Explosions in the Sky. They certainly have the potential, especially considering this is their first EP. Most bands progress as they gain traction from fans, so we should keep our eye on Ronjo V. If you’re you lucky, you can one day brag to your other pretentious friends about how you heard them first. Maybe you’ll even be lucky enough to talk about how they “totally sold out,” and you’ll have me to thank.
Every song on the album is guaranteed to have two things: passion and emotion. These songs are a way to take us along on their philosophical journey through life, riding passenger seat while they fly over the world, picking it apart and trying to make sense of it.
