New coaching staff prepares St. Edward’s lacrosse team for spring competition

The St. Edward’s University men’s club lacrosse team has two road games over spring break.

After a successful fall season, the St. Edward’s University men’s club lacrosse team is looking to come back from a few close losses to finish their season strong with two away games over spring break.

The lacrosse team is halfway through their spring season and hold a 2-2 record, winning games at Texas A&M Corpus Christi, 17-3, and the University of Incarnate Word, 8-4.

Club President Michael McNulty credits the team’s two new coaches — Briggs Thompson and Mackswell Dickson — for helping get the players in the right mindset for both practices and games.

“They have increased our players’ knowledge for the game, our games have been very competitive and we have been conditioning much more,” McNulty said.

Sophomore player Sam Bova also noted the difference in play this year with the change in coaching staff.

“They really care about all of us and want to see us play our best every game,” Bova said.

The coaches were also able to reach out to the lacrosse team at the University of Texas at Austin and have been able to set up a few joint practices, allowing the St. Edward’s team to play with and against them at their facilities.

Between coordinating all practices, making sure players have paperwork in and organizing games within their league, a lot of responsibility is placed on the club’s officers. McNulty and sophomore co-captain Andrew Stingi share this workload.

“I usually put in about eight to 10 hours a week,” McNulty said. “It can be very challenging at times with balancing school, work and the team, but it has also been very rewarding.”

The team is currently preparing for a doubleheader weekend with games on March 19-20. Both games are away as players will be travelling to University of Louisiana at Lafayette, and to rival Sam Houston State University.

Looking for success while on the road, the team has been preparing with practice three days a week working on intense game play for both the offense and defense.

“We have a smaller team, so everyone has had to play a larger role,” Bova said. “All of us have gotten a lot of playing time during games so putting in hard work at practice has definitely prepared us for that.”

They are also looking ahead to the end of their spring season with one final home game against Rice University on April 3, and closing out the year against the University of Texas at San Antonio the following weekend on April 9.

With a few key seniors leaving the team at the end of the year, new players are welcomed to try-out next fall.
