Amy’s ‘Super South’ Location Officially Closed
Sunday night, St. Edward’s University students bid farewell to one of their favorite hangouts — the Amy’s Ice Creams across the street.
Despite the chilly night, several Hilltoppers came to get their Amy’s fix before the closest location to campus closed down on Oct. 25.
“A majority” of the customers on the closing date were St. Edward’s students who stood waiting “in a line that went all the way to the other store,” Amy’s employee and junior Jackson King said.
Hilltopper hoodies and T-shirts could be spotted inside and outside the ice cream parlor, as friend groups gathered to enjoy Amy’s Ice Creams one last time.
“We’re all here as freshmen. It was a really nice memory … We know this is a big part of St. Edward’s. We got to experience this tradition here, and it’s sad that as soon as we get here, it’s closing,” freshman Elizabeth Ucles said.
The Amy’s employees, many of whom attend or attended St. Edward’s, were working as fast as possible and running low on several key ice cream flavors and toppings.
As the 11 p.m. closing time came near, Ricky Martin’s “Livin’ the Vida Loca” came on the speakers and several people sang along, embracing the bitter-sweet moment.
As customers were waiting in line, they could write letters of memories and farewells to Amy. One note said, “Consider relocating onto St. Edward’s.”
When students first arrive to St. Edward’s, one of the first places that introduces them to the weird world of Austin was Amy’s Ice Cream.
In a letter inside the shop, the Amy’s Family said, “Our lease recently expired and the landlord’s renewal stunned us with proposed rent double the amount of our prior lease and we simply couldn’t sustain a great experience with this sudden increase.”
The letter also stated that the decision to close the location came with careful consideration and many attempts to seek a solution.
Open for the past 10 years, the Super South location had created “The Hilltopper” in 2009 based on votes from St. Edward’s students.
With a retro-hipster feel, bright bold colored walls, classic movie references throughout the store and creative ice cream names, Amy’s “Super South” location was certainly a unique part of the St. Edward’s culture that will be missed by many students.
