Lick on this: Blue Bell out, two tasty frozen treats to take over Outtakes
For many Texans, Sept. 1 was a day for the history books: It marked the day that Blue Bell returned to store shelves after a summer hiatus.
However, here on the hilltop, Blue Bell will not be coming back any time soon.
General Manager of Bon Appetite Michael Smith said that the famous Texas ice cream will not be back on campus this semester, but they do have other alternatives.
“I’m not saying it will never come back, but we brought in two other brands and we’re not about to kick them out just because Blue Bell is back,” Smith said.
In place of Blue Bell, Bon Appetite will be serving Lick Honest Ice Creams, an Austin local company, and Yumi, the retailer of Häagen-Dazs.
“Should we bring back Blue Bell? I’ve skimmed some articles about the bad factory conditions. Maybe we shouldn’t bring back Blue Bell, but we should definitely sell ice cream that’s inexpensive and familiar to the student body,” said Janelle Nacpil, student government senator.
“We’re also in the process of trying to get Ben and Jerry’s, but they don’t like being in the same case as Häagen-Dazs so we’re trying to figure that out,” Smith said.
The University of Texas at Austin’s dining services have also reported that they will not be serving Blue Bell either, according to The Daily Texan.
Whole sale Manager Claudia Caballero said that Lick uses local artisans to create their unique flavors.
“Ninety-nine percent of our ingredients are Texas ingredients,” Caballero said.
The flavors that will be available on campus from Lick are Caramel Salt Lick; Dark Chocolate, Olive Oil and Sea Salt; Goat Cheese, Thyme and Honey; Hill Country Honey and Vanilla Bean; Horchata; and Texas Sheet Cake.
“Lick may not appeal to as many students simply because they are more expensive and don’t sell as many traditional flavors,” Nacpil said. “I love Lick.”
There will be a Lick Ice Cream demo in Hunt Hall on Sept. 17 from 5-7 p.m. sampling three of the flavors.
When asked about her thoughts on Blue Bell Caballero had this to say:
“We both have different products and different markets, but we’re happy to have another Texas company back.”
