SXSW: Austin Music Awards showcases local favorites
Austin is the live music capital of the world, so it makes sense that the best of the best in the industry were in attendance and on stage at the 33rd annual Austin Music Awards.
Held March 18 at the Austin Convention Center, the show was a showcase of names well-known to Austin.
They came, they performed, they conquered, and may or may not have had a few slices of Southside Flying Pizza.
The event included a segment called “Viva La Diva” with performances by Gina Chavez, Sunny Sweeney and Tameca Jones to name a few.
Most can agree that the highlight of the night was a lovely tribute to Ian McLagan (the late musician was awarded Best Keys player) performed by Charlie Sexton, Steven Van Zandt and Scrappy Jud Newcomb.
Another notable and certainly diverse performance of the evening was the “Return to Austin High” segment featuring notable alumnus of Austin High: Shakey Graves, Phranchyze, Elias Haslanger, Gary Clark Jr. and Eve Monsees.
The performance was a perfect representation of the wide range of genres found in the Austin music scene.
Although the show had a hectic start due to the masses of people lined up to attend, it was an enjoyable night both for nominees and for people with a love for music.
It didn’t matter if you won or lost or if you just went to watch, it was apparent good times were had by all.
