‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ dominated by unintentional comedy
As I watched “Fifty Shades of Grey” I had one thought: is this a comedy?
“Fifty Shades of Grey” is about Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson), a young recent college graduate, and her relationship with mysterious billionaire Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan), who is into BDSM.
While it may be posing as a romance, “Fifty Shades” contains so many funny moments, intentional or not.
Every time Grey told Steele to bend over to spank her for “punishment,” I almost lost it. Then there’s the contract negotiation scene.
In order for Steele to have a relationship with Grey, she must sign a contract that details the nature of their relationship. Grey will be the dominant; Steele the submissive. The contract continues to explain the sexual acts that will be a part of the relationship. Now, this might not sound funny, but go watch the movie and see how Dornan and Johnson play off each other in this scene.
The actual plot of “Fifty Shades of Grey” is not that great, but the movie does have two redeeming qualities — the soundtrack and visuals.
This movie has an amazing soundtrack that includes Beyoncé, The Weeknd, Sia and Ellie Goulding. Yes, Beyoncé stole a scene or two. Her remix of “Crazy in Love” set the mood to when Grey brings Steele into his “play room,” where he keeps all his BDSM gear.
Visually, “Fifty Shades of Grey” is stunning. Director Sam Taylor-Johnson showcased Seattle and the state of Washington. Everything was gorgeous in the movie, including the sex scenes. Those scenes were actually very tasteful; it’s not as smutty as people might be expecting.
Even if you’re slightly curious about “Fifty Shades of Grey,” just submit and let the movie dominate you for a couple of hours.
