Unique musician puts on energetic show for sold-out crowd
The Philadelphia-based rapper Lil Dicky appeared in the spotlight when his song “Ex-Boyfriend” received one million views in the 24 hours after its release. This video sparked a phenomenon that would change his life forever.
David Burd began his professional career at an advertising agency in San Francisco which only encouraged his creative energy. This energy led to the creation of his rap career as Lil Dicky. After his first song’s success, Lil Dicky began to release more tracks, gaining an even greater following.
This buildup of followers led to a high demand for a Lil Dicky tour. A Kickstarter campaign was created to fund Lil Dicky’s Professional Rapper Tour. His first live show was held in his home town of Philadelphia and completely sold out. This performance gave fans a sneak peak of his onstage personality and encouraged them to buy tickets to his tour.
Austin was the eighth stop on his tour. The mind-blowing concert was held inside Stubb’s Barbecue on Red River St. and was completely sold out. DJ Omega opened the show with interesting mixes but an underwhelming performance. His “hype-men” spent the entire set on their phones as DJ Omega played premade mixes and posed for the camera man. Overall, the opening act did very little to engage the audience.
It wasn’t until DJ Omega began introducing Lil Dicky that the crowd livened up. Lil Dicky’s creative entrance through the crowd laid the perfect foundation for what would be a very theatrical set. He opened with “Jewish Flow,” a song that epitomizes his persona, and followed with a carefully crafted PowerPoint presentation. The presentation explained his “rules” for the show, declaring it a “judgment free zone” as a way to encourage fans to “go wild.” Any time there was a lull or a moment of silence in the crowd, Lil Dicky initiated a brief dance session to bring up the energy levels.
The entire show was high-energy. Transitions between songs only got the crowd more excited to be there. Lil Dicky’s love of performing was evident in the way he interacted with the audience. His goal was to give his fans the best experience of their lives, and he succeeded. After the show, he waited with the merch to meet anyone who wanted to meet him and talk to everyone in line. Lil Dicky proved with his first tour that he is a force to be reckoned with. His talent and love for his fans will help him “become a bawlaa.”
