Derek Jeter passes Militor on the all-time hits list
As of April 7th, Yankee’s captain Derek Jeter has had 3,321 hits in his 20-season career. On April 6th, Jeter passed Paul Molitor for sole possession of eighth place on Major League Baseball’s (MLB) all-time hits list. Jeter tied and passed Molitor with a pair of singles to right field against the Toronto Blue Jays. Those two hits also moved him into the fourth place spot on the all-time American League hits list.
Next on the hits list is Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski, who played with the Red Sox from 1961-83. Yastrzemski piled up 3,419 hits in his career. If Jeter can stay healthy, he should have problem also catching Honus Wagner, with 3,430 hits. Looking even further down the road at number five on the list, Tris Speaker, is certainly reachable considering the number of hits Jeter has had in past seasons. Jeter will need to have had 199 hits by the end of the season in order to catch Speaker, something he has done eight times, including just two year’s ago.
While Jeter has made it clear the 2014 season will be his last, one can’t help but wonder how far he would have gone if he had stayed healthy last year, and decided to play another season or two. It’s was once a real possibility Jeter could make a run at the top two hit leaders, Ty Cobb and Pete Rose, and join the elusive 4,000 hit club. While that isn’t going to happen, Jeter will be remembered more for his determination and ability to consistently win and preform, not only in the regular season, but also when it counts most in the postseason. Jeter has collected exactly 200 hits in postseason play, 72 more than any other player.
