Letterman replacement has to be historic game changer
“Late Show” host David Letterman announced last week that he plans to retire sometime next year, ending his several-decade career as a late night personality.
Now, the big question surrounding Letterman’s retirement is: who will replace him? There are many names being tossed around, including Stephen Colbert and Tina Fey, but they both have found their homes with Comedy Central and NBC, respectively. Here are some suggestions for Letterman’s successor:
Chelsea Handler
Currently, Handler hosts “Chelsea Lately” on E!, but she has expressed dissatisfaction with the network and plans to leave when her contract is done at the end of the year. While Handler may be very brash, she could be what CBS needs to fight “The Tonight Show” starring Jimmy Fallon.
Handler is young and hilarious — plus she’s a woman; she would make history by becoming the first woman to host a major network’s late night show.
NBC should have tapped her to be the new host of “Late Night” instead of Seth Meyers, but their loss is maybe CBS’s gain.
Conan O’Brien
If not Handler, there’s always O’Brien; he has the experience from hosting “Late Night,” “The Tonight Show” and his current show “Conan.” Like Handler, Conan’s contract is up within the next year, making him available to replace Letterman, again.
O’Brien has a big fan base that would follow him wherever he goes, but they represent a small segment of the audience he would have to reach. If Conan’s humor could not translate from “Late Night” to “The Tonight Show,” then he should stick to cable television.
Neil Patrick Harris
Now, Harris may not be the first name for people to think about when looking for a replacement, but he would be a perfect choice for CBS. Currently, he doesn’t have a job because “How I Met Your Mother” just ended, and Harris already has a relationship with the network.
Harris knows how to sing, dance and, most importantly, be funny. He could be CBS’s answer to Jimmy Fallon. Unlike O’Brien, Harris would he a historic choice because of his sexual orientation.
Any of these choices would be a great replacement for Letterman, but if CBS wants a historic game-changing choice then Handler is the perfect candidate.
Of course, CBS could always just call Jay Leno since he’s not doing much.
