SXSW offers alternative entertainment with craft fair
For the first time, SXSW teamed up this year with Renegade Craft Fair (RCF) to offer attendees a free three-day event full of arts and crafts.
RCF showcased indie artists and craftsmen who came together to display their “do-it-yourself” high quality goods. The Palmer Events Center became residency to an array of handmade jewelry, screen prints and apothecary.
Not only did the RCF give the chance for artisans to sell their goods, many of them gave attendees the chance to experience being DIY-ers themselves. Attendees could create their own nail polish, dabble in screen printing and even learn how to weave on a loom.
The RCF also showcased the inspirational stories behind each artisan. Through their work, artists and craftsmen alike put a personal touch on their goods.
One vendor who stood out was the Giving Keys, who had a message of paying it forward. Each piece of jewelry featured a key with a motivational word engraved into the metal. The idea was to buy the key that inspires you and then later give the key away to someone else who may need the same motivation.
Many artisans provided goods that also helped those in need. Many proceeds from the event went along to help others and, like the Giving Keys, many employed those less fortunate such as the homeless, giving them the opportunity to sell their goods.
With many artisans promoting positive messages through their products, SXSW’s featuring the RCF was a lovely addition away from the busy downtown scene.
