SXSW Music: Rosie Flores

San Antonio’s rockabilly, Tex-Mex queen Rosie Flores will bring a bigger crowd to the dance floor than her male counterparts, all while wearing her signature cowboy boots and cat eye glasses.

On March 16 at the Continental Club on South Congress, Rosie Flores joined 10 other acts to play alongside singer/guitarist Alejandro Escovedo for his Alejandro Escovedo & Friends! party. Among the acts were punk bands, tribute bands to Lou Reed and experimental bands who have befriended Escovedo on their musical journey. The most surprising and fun act of the day, however, was Rosie Flores.

Rosie took the stage in all black with her red cowboy boots and throwback cat eye glasses and instantly brought the crowd closer to the stage the minute she began playing her electric guitar. It might be rude to note Ms. Flores’ age; however this is what truly made for an outstanding performance. In her early 60s, she proved that women can still shred the guitar, drawing people near one another to dance to some true old-school rockabilly tunes.

Rosie Flores is a must-see because her talent is incredible and infectious; so much so, that you will wish you had grown up during the 1950s to relive the era of rock n roll.
