The latest addition to Marvel’s Cinematic Universe may be its best film yet. “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” has everything audiences have come to expect from a Marvel movie: humor, great fights, references to previous movies and an amazing plot.

I must point out that this movie has to be the most violent movie Disney has ever released, but it would not be a superhero movie without some violence.

“Captain America,” played by Chris Evans, is a game-changer for Marvel. It takes everything that audiences have become accustomed to and turns those expectations upside down. Everything that happens in the movie will have repercussions later in the future.

The general theme for the movie is how far people are willing to go for the price of freedom, which resonates with many of the issues the nation is grappling with today. There are some parallels in the movie, such as the surveillance program operated by the National Security Agency, but of course that could be me digging way too far into the movie.

The movie starts off very patriotic, but as we start to descend into this world with Steve Rogers, stars and stripes are traded in for deception and evil.

As usual, “Captain America” lays the foundations for multiple upcoming movies from Marvel, especially 2015’s “The Avengers: Age of Ultron.” There is even a very quick mention of a future Marvel hero.

Evans may be the star of the movie, but he is joined by a remarkable cast including Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Sebastian Stan (the Winter Soldier), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury) and the great Robert Redford. Joining the Marvel universe for the first time is Anthony Mackie who plays the Falcon. Hopefully Mackie is in future Marvel movies because he is too charismatic for just one film.

Heads up: when the movie is over, do not leave the theater because there are two post credits scenes, both of which are very important for future films.

And before watching “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” I highly recommend watching all of Marvel’s movies starting with “Iron Man” up to the most recent release “Thor: The Dark World.” There are so many characters and references from all of those movies that are so much more enjoyable if you know who they are.

“Captain America: The Winter Solider” will be released April 4.
