Golf team on Haught streak with recent wins
The St. Edward’s University Women’s Golf team has piled up an impressive record this year, winning four tournaments. Junior Haley Haught is leading the team. Haught’s performance has been one of the best in the Heartland Conference. She has finished in the top 10 six times, the top five three times and she has even won a tournament. Her great individual effort has not gone unrecognized either, as she was named the Heartland Conference player of the week for the third consecutive week on March 3-9. With the help of Haught’s dominance, the women’s golf team has earned its ranking as one of the top ten teams in the country.
Haught contributes a lot of her success to her coaches and teammates.
“My teammates and coach are my family, we have an indescribable relationship that makes being together so much fun.”
Haught has a great long game, but has been trying to improve other aspects of her game to help not only herself but also her team.
“My short game has always been the most inconsistent part of my game. But after being at St. Edward’s for about three years, lots of practice and help from Coach has helped tremendously.”
With the help of a great coach and great teammates, the women’s golf team looks to make a push to the national tournament. But during a long-season it can be very difficult. That’s why Haley Haught is extremely grateful for her coach.
“Coach McNeil has been the best coach I could have ever dreamed of working with. She has not only encouraged me in golf but in everything I do.”
With a coach that is backing up her team and with a great leader in Haught, the Hilltopper’s goals continue to be set high. To prepare for games, Haught goes through a warm-up routine that helps her focus.
“I like to go putt for about 15 minutes, then chip a few balls, and finally go to the range, stretch and hit about 20 golf balls.”
Haught is maintaining her focus, along with the rest of the Hilltoppers. The team’s mixture of great chemistry and strong mentality is very promising, and the Lady Hilltoppers hope that it will carry them all the way to nationals.
