Brace yourselves, Austinites, for winter is coming to SXSW
The Seven Kingdoms on “Game of Thrones” may be in a distant place, time and embroiled in war, but that is not stopping HBO from bringing a little piece of Westeros to SXSW. People may visit the exhibit March 7-11 at Austin Music Hall. It is free and open to the public.
Visitors will be able to see various artifacts from all four seasons of “Game of Thrones.” This includes costumes, props, armor and weapons, all of which have been handcrafted by artisans, according to HBO.
One highlight of the props is bound to be Jaime Lannister’s severed hand. Another possible favorite should be Daenerys Targaryen’s dragon eggs. Anyone planning an attempt to steal these items should know that the artifacts are enclosed in glass, similar to how a museum protects real world historical objects.
Along with those props, HBO is bringing some official “Game of Thrones” licensed items that everyone could buy from from their online store.
If that does not grab your attention, then maybe HBO’s “all-new, immersive virtual reality experience that will place them within the world of Westeros” will get you excited.
The experience will have visitors climb the Wall and fight off wildlings and white walkers. HBO created this virtual reality experience using the Oculus Rift, a virtual reality helmet and software. Previews have been made available to the press, but the final version will debut during SXSW.
While props and a virtual reality experience are cool, everyone will be clamoring for their right to sit upon the Iron Throne. Visitors will be able to be king or queen of Westeros for a moment by taking photos on the coveted throne.
Not attending this exhibition will be a grave mistake, but it is certainly better than getting an invitation for a wedding from Walter Frey.
