Must-see Valentine’s Day film for romantics and cynics alike
In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, I found a movie perfect for both the cynical and the head-over-heels in love. “Serious Moonlight” (2009) is a hilariously surprising romantic comedy. Not only do Meg Ryan, Timothy Hutton and Kristen Bell star in the movie, but there is a great scene involving a toilet and duct tape.
The movie takes you on an adventure into the obstacles of marriage. So many things happen in the movie that you are left in awe by the end. If that is not enough reason to watch the movie, then the toilet scene should be.
The movie opens with Ian (Hutton) telling Louise (Ryan) that he is leaving her for a younger woman (Bell). Either out of anger or pure craziness, Louise hurls a sizable flower pot at Ian’s head, knocking him out. When he wakes up, he is duct-taped to a chair. Yes, Ian is taped to a chair before the toilet. That is, until he has to go to the bathroom.
Louise becomes so manic and obsessive over Ian that it seems a little scary, yet also very amusing. In a trial of efforts to make Ian fall back in love with her, she bakes cookies, sings songs, shows him pictures of their wedding and the list goes on.
In an unexpected turn of events, a burglar (Justin Long) invades the home. The burglar sees Ian taped to the toilet and finds it delightfully entertaining. He then tapes up Louise, locks them together in the bathroom, and proceeds to throw a party in the home with his friends. While taped up together in the bathroom, Ian feels an overwhelming need to protect Louise and their love is finally rekindled.
There are a lot of questions that the movie leaves unanswered, like how did Louise carry a grown man up the stairs, and how did Ian get over his wife attacking him? But overall, the movie teaches us some valuable lessons about marriage: if your hubby tries to leave you, kidnap him and force-feed him cookies until he loves you again.
In case you are worried about spoilers, there are still some great scenes of the movie left unrevealed, so snuggle up to your boo (or friends) this Valentine’s Day and enjoy this treat!
