Fun Fun Fun Preview: Tycho
In 2011, chillwave was massive, lots of people were going crazy over alternative dubstep like Beats Antique (the first sort of dubstep show I ever went to, and it blew my mind) and mainstream dubstep like Skream and Bassnectar and also there was like this big election thing that was kind of important.
But 2011 was also the year I found out about Tycho, right after his third album, “Dive,” dropped in early November. This was around the same time I was going through a big chillwave phase (they come in ebbs and flows, man) and getting into some stuff people have called post-chillwave (laughable) like Com Truise. Basically Ghostly International was my spotlighted record label at the time.
So I have some nostalgia with Tycho, but he has also been a lasting force. I ventured another listen to “Dive” the other day to prepare for FFF8 and the acoustic drums, liquid guitars and Siberian wilderness-sized pads still transported me to another place. Also, he has gotten pretty huge in the electro world.
When I heard neighboring Bonnaroovians blasting “A Walk,” still his most popular track, at their campsite at Bonnaroo 2012, I knew Tycho had become something more than a downtempo electro kid’s wet dream or a happenstance YouTube-related link discovery (I fell into the latter category, linked from Purity Ring’s “Ungirthed,” the only track the young duo had out at the time).
Tycho is music for the modern human. It has to be healthy. Each track is just so chill, there has to be some kind of as-of-yet-unstudied blood pressure-reducing factor to the sound. Either way, check him out at Fun Fun Fun Fest, and just chill out and enjoy the journey, ghouls and goblins.
