Miley Cyrus’ antics not apart of growing up, make her a joke

Miley Cyrus is relentless. Her and her public relations team refuse to give the public a moment of peace. It is as if they are afraid we will forget about her if we are not constantly reminded.

Last week Cyrus’ released the Wrecking Ball music video, and this week Rolling Stone published their interview with her. Cyrus’ also released the music video for “23,” which features Mike WiLL Made It, Juicy J and Wiz Khalifa.

The song is about Air Jordan shoes, Michael Jordan’s signature line of footwear. Twenty three was Jordan’s number when he played for the Chicago Bulls. The song and music video allude to basketball and Michael Jordan. However, no one actually plays basketball in the video, unless you count Cyrus straddling a basketball hoop and playing with a bedazzled basketball. The song is all about the shoes.

Cyrus mostly just smokes, cusses, and runs around without pants on because that is what cool grown-ups do. At least, that is what they do in her universe. This is one of the most pressing Cyrus-centric questions: does she abstain from pants solely to be controversial or does she really hate them that much?

In her interview with Rolling Stone, Cyrus offers the world some insight into her recent transformation from precious Disney darling to whatever the hell she is now. She grew up in the entertainment industry, surrounded by adults, now she is ready to just have fun and do what ever she wants.

Ok, fair enough. Being owned by Disney since your tween years certainly must have been a drag. When you are idolized by millions of little girls, you are not allowed to be anything less than perfect. That must have been stressful and frustrating — especially since people still see her as Hannah Montana, despite her painstaking work to shatter that image.

The interview itself is an interesting read. She gets a tattoo, goes sky diving and cusses a bunch. Cyrus is entertaining, funny and unapologetic— something she obviously learned from Rihanna. She just sounds like a 20 year old.

In the face of all her recent antics it is easy to forget that Cyrus is just acting like a dumb 20 year old, something that the majority of us have done or are currently doing. It is an awkward time for most people; you trade in your childhood interests for grown up ones. Unfortunately, Cyrus seems to think that sex, cigarettes and cussing like a sailor separates the women from the girls.

The funniest part of the interview is when Cyrus offers some advice to Justin Bieber. She advises him to not go out without a shirt on and to not start drama; otherwise, people are not going to take him seriously. Meanwhile, Cyrus has been running around without pants on for over a month now. How does that differ from Bieber not wearing a shirt?

Since Cyrus obviously has vocal talent, we want to be able to take her seriously. But, at the same time, the way she behaves is so off putting. She says that she is “just being Miley” — her favorite defense for stupid and immature behavior. But this excuse is starting to wear thin. None of this makes her cool or particularly likable, it just makes her a joke.
