LONDON –> AUSTIN: My second home
Driving through Portales, NM, last week, with barely a tree in sight, I thought about what my expectations for moving to Texas were three years ago.
I always encountered the general stereotypes of America––many about Texas–growing up in England. I remember the first thought that went through my mind when St. Edward’s University contacted me about playing soccer here: “Dad, I’m not moving to Texas.”
Being raised in a big, busy city like London, I never thought that St. Edward’s would be the place for me. All I expected from Texas were cowboys on horses, cacti, a southern accent that I would barely be able to understand, and for me to be the out-of-place brown girl in the crowd. Luckily, however, I was proven wrong. To be honest, I hadn’t even heard of Austin before I moved over here. As you can tell, my prospects of Texas were not very high, and if it wasn’t for the great women’s soccer program at St. Edward’s, I would probably be on a beach in Florida right now.
Anywhere I moved away from home was always going to be a difficult decision, but I have to say, from the day I moved to Austin I never once regretted my choice. What helped me settle in so quickly was the diversity of the city; even today I’ll forget I’m even living in Texas from time to time. Everyone thinks I’m Mexican anyway, so it’s great! The people of Austin were so welcoming to me. I have never met friendlier people than those I’ve met here, but maybe that has something to do with my British accent––everyone wants to start conversations with me! I have yet to see any cowboys, but have gotten used to the idea of cowboy boots and hats being fashionable here!
It’s hard trying to do Austin justice when I go back home and tell my friends in London about my experiences. They still have all the same stereotypes that I left behind three years ago, and I always say that you have to experience Austin to truly believe how amazing the city actually is. I feel so blessed to have the opportunity to be here, and am proud to call Austin my second home!
