ACL Review: Portugal. The Man
Portugal. The Man started with “Purple Yellow Red & Blue,” one of their most popular songs. The guitar interspersed with the synthesizer was an interesting choice to open with, and it was a strong start to their act. The bass led a beat that blended in well with the next song.
Much of the first half of the show focused on the instruments, with the lead singer John Gourley jamming out to extended solos. At one point, it seemed performance was only going to be a majority of instrumentals, due to the band taking long performing solos in between lyrics.
However, the second half of their act made up for the first by Gourley incorporating a lot more of his high-pitched vocals with the band’s more upbeat music and rhythms, like “Atomic Man” and “People Say.” There was a very relaxed and mellow mood in the latter half of the performance, with the audience singing along with their favorite lyrics.
During one of their breaks, the band thanked the audience saying, “Thank you guys so much. If you’ve ever seen us before you know we [freakin’] love Texas,” followed by loud cheers from the audience.
Nearing the end of the show, the band played a cover of Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick in the Wall, Part 2.” It got the crowd more pumped up for the finale—an encore of “Purple Yellow Red and Blue,” ending with a crescendo leading to the final note. Portugal. The Man opened and closed with the same song, to the audience’s delight.
