Alumni start beer blog, publish Austin beer history book

St. Edward’s University alumni Caroline Wallace, Holly Aker, Ari Auber, Wendy Cawthon, Shaun Martin and Kat McCullough, along with Texas State University alum Sarah Wood, decided to start a blog of their own. Now they are known as the founders of a beer blog called Bitch Beer.

“The term ‘bitch beer’ is used to refer to the sugary, low-alcohol content beverages that frat boys give girls at parties in place of beer because they think we want that,” Auber said. The founders want to change the term into the idea that all beer is bitch beer.

Their blog consists of posts about beer events, food and drink recipes, reviews of beer and breweries and, basically, all things beer. A unique aspect of their blog includes pieces about women and beer.

The ladies of Bitch Beer try to post daily, but they update it at least every couple days.

All but two of the founders were Hilltop Views staff members while attending SEU. Beyond being the founders of this blog, they each have their own individual jobs.

“We went to a brewery one day–a girls day–just hanging out, and noticed there weren’t many ladies,” co-founder Aker said. From that day, these ladies decided that “beer and women” was something they could write about.

“We could just go home and buy a URL…so we did,” Aker said with a smile. So, in February 2011, bitchbeer.org was founded.

The founders repeatedly expressed that they want people to get involved and interested in the beer community because they care about it. “Austin is such a go-local community and such a great up-and-coming beer scene,” Wallace said.

Bitch Beer does not just report on Austin news and events, but also on things happening in Seattle, Washington and Dallas, Texas where two of the co-founders are located. The blog tries to maintain both a Texas and national coverage.

Along the journey, the founders experienced some bumps here and there. “Our biggest obstacle is our age… a lot of people, when they meet us, think we are too young to know things about beer,” Aker said. Despite this obstacle, the founders have recently published a book that they wrote together called “Austin Beer: Capital City History On Tap.”

The book is a comprehensive history that begins around the 1840s/60s and continues to the present and future. “[The book] isn’t in a factual tone. It is written in how we talk… something you can easily read and enjoy to read,” Aker said.

The book contains stories about people within the community, photos, community events and even a drinking game that readers can play while reading.

“Beer isn’t just Bud Light,” Aker said. The founders of Bitch Beer emphasize that beer has millions of flavors and there is a beer for everyone. The ladies of the blog have come across all types of beer, including bacon beer, a beer made out of bull testicles and a beer that tastes like chocolate and lobster.

“If you think you’re not into beer, then you probably haven’t had the right beer,” Wallace said. The founders report that there are many beers with different flavors and tastes.

“College kids should know that it’s not much more expensive than any shitty beer they are buying… those two extra dollars are so worth it,” Aker said.

The beer community has become a part of these ladies’ lives. “[The blog] was a reason to stay connected [with each other],” Wood said. Wood also reports that most of her friends are in the beer community. “It is a lot more than just the beer… it is like that agent that brings everybody together,” Wallace said. “It’s like the glue,” Auber continued.

Bitch Beer’s plans for the future include: a national audience appeal, trying multimedia and interactive approaches like Google hangouts and possibly, further down the road, a second edition of their book.

“Beer is everywhere…so we can take the blog anywhere,” Aker said.
