ACL SUNDAY REVIEW: The Avett Brothers

Few sounds are as distinct and soothing as the bluegrass-inspired indie folk of The Avett Brothers.

Brothers Scott (banjo) and Seth Avett (guitar), along with Joe Kwan (cello), Bob Crawford (stand-up bass) and Jacob Edwards (drums), form this string-lovers dream band.

The long-haired brothers have a sincerity in their vocals and harmonies and brought that to the AMD stage Sunday at sunset.

They played a wide range of songs spanning their nearly 15-year career, but focused primarily on their newest album “The Carpenter,” which released earlier this year.

Their songs were poetic and heartfelt with a bouncy twang, and crowds swayed back and forth to the melodies of the brothers. They themselves danced, jumped and shook their long hair as they played, creating a relaxed and carefree environment.

Leaving the show, one could not help but smile. Two brothers had just performed well-crafted, old-time music from their hearts.
