With temperatures declining, leather accessories are rising
Fashion columnist Katie Brown spots the latest styles on the Hilltop in order to bring the most up to date coverage on what is in, what is out and what to expect for this fashion season.
Keep in mind that 9th grade for me was during that awkward phase when the only socially “acceptable” clothing came in the form of jeans and baby T’s with the word Hollister or Abercrombie & Fitch plastered on the chest. In other words, there was very little diversity when it came to style.
What I came to find was that while I thought my new leather jacket was stylish and cool, my classmates seemed to think otherwise.
When I wore my jacket to school, I received comments that varied from “you look like a biker” to a sarcastic “sweet leather jacket.” Yeah, these snarky remarks got to me, but they were no competition for the confidence that beloved jacket gave me.
I continued to wear my jacket with pride until I unfortunately outgrew it a year later. By that time, the leather jacket trend had come and gone, though, but I still missed the little bit of leather it brought to my life.
This fall, leather has not only made its return in the form of jackets, but also skirts, shirts and even pants. The great thing about leather is that it is such a versatile fabric, so it can easily be dressed up or dressed down. Pair a leather jacket with a casual pair of jeans and a shirt, or wear leather pants with some heels for a night out.
With the weather starting to get a bit cooler on some days, leather has definitely become more prominent on campus. Much of the leather I see is embellished with studs, which incorporates another trend into the leather phase.
Ever since I had my first leather jacket, I have been awaiting the day that leather would come back in style. And like most trends, it has. Right now is the time to embrace your inner leather, people.
