UPD arrests transients in woods
Earlier this year, the woods by Highway I-35 and Woodward Street housed transients living there illegally.
University Police Captain Dan Beck said that so far this year, two individuals have been arrested in the woods.
“Both [were] arrested on warrants from other agencies [which was] based on the totality of their history and danger [they] posed,” Beck said.
The individuals in questions were arrested on counts of public intoxication, evading arrest, parole violation and having municipal court warrants. The individuals are now facing jail time.
Beck said University Police Department officers found the transients when conducting a regular patrol of the wooded area.
Trash was left behind at the scene, Beck said. Facilities hired an outside contractor to clear the woods of trash. Facilities does maintenance in the wooded area to keep trails clear and trash picked up for UPD patrols.
“[UPD] conducts regular patrols of the wooded area and responds to complaints … in order to maintain the safety and security of the campus,” Beck said.
The woods are patrolled to prevent illegal habitation.
UPD works with Facilities to keep wooded areas open enough for patrols and to maintain a watch for fire.
