Loose talk confirms football at St. Edward’s a silly dream–take offline
There will still be no football program at St. Edward’s University–at least not while we’re young. St. Edward’s last had a football team in 1939.
The program was called off when the school decided it could not muster the money necessary to buy enough equipment needed to compete.
The team, known as the ‘Edsman,’ suspended play with the intention of returning after World War II. However, St. Edward’s never again held a competitive college football game.
Despite not having a consistent football presence on campus, St. Edward’s has hosted a couple of notable football events in its history. For example, Hall of Famer Knute Rockne held a coaching clinic on campus in 1925.
The legendary Dallas Cowboys of the ’90s held training camp at St. Edward’s from 1990-1997. Deion Sanders–the tumultuous cornerback for Dallas at the time–drove a customized golf cart around campus, complete with water misters and a stereo, Austin American-Statesman reporter Rick Cantu said.
The Dallas Cowboys practice field was on the east side of campus along Moody Drive.
However, the field the Cowboys practiced on is now home to Dujarie and Basil Moreau Halls.
Assistant Athletic Director Greg Cooper sat in on several meetings regarding the possible formation of a St. Edward’s University football team.
