Student organizes service program to offer aid to East Africa
Three years ago, St. Edward’s University junior Patrick Dunlap went to Africa on a service trip and fell in love with what he calls the “most amazing people” he has ever met. Since then, he has gone back twice through the Colorado-based Global Livingston Institute on a specialized service program. He is now working to provide the same opportunities to more St. Edward’s students.
Dunlap was first connected with the Global Livingston Institute through its Co-director, Jamie Van Leeuwen, two years ago during his Campus Ministry-sponsored Alternative Spring Break trip to Denver. Van Leeuwen, a longtime friend of St. Edward’s professor Steve Rodenborn, has worked politically for years to combat poverty in Denver. When Leeuwen was awarded the Livingston Fellowship in 2005, he organized an opportunity for others to further examine the challenges of poverty in East African Nations. Thus, the Global Livingston Institute was born.
