Fun Fun Fun Fest: Metal gods close out weekend
There are few words to describe the potency of seeing Slayer in full flight.
The wild, atonal solos and crushing rhythms of guitarists Kerry King and Exodus’ Gary Holt (subbing for Jeff Hanneman, who is ill) merged with the pounding of drummer Dave Lombardo and topped with bassist/vocalist Tom Araya barking out tales of serial killers and Nazi horrors to become a treat for metalheads for nearly 30 years, and it was even more so on Sunday.
While their set contained plenty of recent material, the band did not skimp on classics. “Angel of Death” and “Raining Blood” brought the audience’s devil horns up and their heads banging.
Headlining the main stage of the festival, Slayer provided a perfect closer to the varied madness of the weekend, ensuring all metal-lovers went home happy.
