Athletes and academics do mix
St. Edward’s University ranked 44th among Division II universities and colleges in the September release of the ninth annual National Collegiate Scouting Association (NCSA) Power Rankings.
The NCSA is an athletic recruiting network that creates opportunities for student athletes while empowering leaders though sports. Its community consists of college and high school coaches, varsity level student athletes and their parents, and business and professional communities.
“These rankings show that not only are we successful on the playing field but we also excel in the classroom,” said Logan Lawrence, public relations associate at St. sports.”
As a Division II school, St. Edward’s is allowed to have up to 14 sports—seven men’s and seven women’s—counting toward collecting points in the Learfield Sports Director’s Cup ranking. However, each school can decide which sports to include so long as they do not go over the maximum allowance.
Last year, St. Edward’s University ranked 19th in the NCSA Power Rankings and made it into the top ten back in 2005. Since then, St. Edward’s has ranked in the top 100 every year except 2008 and 2009.
“Academics are very important to me and our team,” said Todd Ohlmeyer, the St. Edward’s Men’s Golf coach. “Several of my players have aspirations of playing golf professionally after college but they also know the odds are small and they want to make sure they are prepared for life if golf doesn’t pan out. We, as a program, take a lot of pride in our 11 Academic All-Americans over the last few years and each player lists that as a career
