Austin Film Festival review: The Descendants
Hawaii is supposed to be a place of beauty, joy and overall paradise. But when your wife is in a coma and you’re facing a huge legal decision, paradise can seem more like a hell.
That’s the exact situation Matt King (George Clooney) finds himself in. Matt has the stressful job of finding a proper buyer for his family’s land trust, which contains hundreds of acres of some of the last undeveloped land in Hawaii. While he’s going through that debacle, his wife becomes seriously injured in a boating accident.
While his wife is in the hospital, workaholic Matt must relearn how to be a dad to bring his family back together. With one daughter handling her mother’s accident by resorting to violence and anger and another daughter who has a fondness for drinking and bonehead guys, this task may be the biggest obstacle ahead of Matt.
That is, until his oldest daughter Alex (Shailene Woodley) drops the bomb that Matt’s wife had been cheating on him. In a part bonding experience, part man hunt, Matt takes his daughters on an expedition to find his wife’s lover and at the same time reconnects with the daughters he loves.
One of the best films at Austin Film Fest this year, “The Descendants” will have you wiping away tears one second and laughing out loud the next. Clooney gives an amazing performance as a man grieving for his dying wife yet simultaneously hating her for her infidelity and all the while dealing with his family’s land trust decision.
“The Descendants” hits theaters Nov. 16 and is one film you do not want to miss.
