Hilltoppers defend home turf in Battle of the Saints
The St. Edward’s women’s soccer team came away with a 1-0 win in overtime against rival St. Mary’s on Thursday afternoon. In the fourth minute of overtime, sophomore forward Rachel Murray scored the golden goal off an assist from senior defender Brianna Hinnenkamp. A large crowd came out to support the Toppers as they took on the St. Mary’s Rattlers in the “Battle of the Saints” on Oct. 6.
Hilltoppers’ offense had a difficult time putting the ball in the net in the first 90 minutes of the game. St. Edward’s took 14 shots total, with four shots on goal saved by Rattler Goalkeeper Paolo Ostros.
St. Edward’s Goalkeeper Claire Tilton had a relatively easy game; she saved the only shot attempt she faced.
The game went into overtime after the first 90 minutes of play yielded a 0-0 score.
The Toppers scored in the first four minutes of overtime. Hinnenkamp gained control of the ball from about 30 yards out and crossed the ball to Murray. Murray shot from 10 yards out to win the game for the Hilltoppers.
Murray and the Hilltoppers are no strangers to playing in overtime. This marked the team’s third straight game that has gone into overtime. Murray has now scored four game-winning goals this season. including two straight golden goals. A golden goal determines the game winner during overtime, and the game ends once the golden goal is scored.
Murray briefly left the field in the second half with an ankle injury. “The goal made it worth it,” Murray said after the game.
While Coach Cowell was glad to get the win, he also saw room for improvement. Cowell felt the team’s play “was not up to standards,” and that “intensity level needs to be
