CNN host to ‘Grace’ dance floor
Season 13 of “Dancing with the Stars” is set to kick off on September 19. Many TV personalities fill out the roster of dancers, which also includes CNN commentator Nancy Grace.
Viewers may be familiar with Grace from her extensive coverage of the Casey Anthony murder trail this past summer. Grace’s self-titled program garnered attention for her harsh criticism of Anthony’s parenting skills and ultimate acquittal.
“The devil is dancing today,” reacted Grace to the jury’s decision.
“Dancing with the Stars” has been described as a program for less-notable or somewhat forgotten celebrities to whirl and twirl across stage in pursuit of the crystal disco ball prize. The show has come into controversy regarding the notability of its cast members, including names such as Kim Kardashian, Kirstie Allie and Bristol Palin. Despite its criticism, the program has been recognized by awards shows as a favorite TV reality competition.
Although Grace has a formidable presence in the media, the question of her “star” power should be scrutinized. Grace herself seemed to lack a confident attitude at the time of her casting.
“I thought someone had gotten my cell phone number and was kidding me,” she told ABC News.
In a society where reality shows are glorified due to party lifestyles and belligerence, Grace’s battle for the trophy appears to bring light to individuals showcasing talents outside of their comfort zone. Her bold attitude aside, Grace deserves credit for stepping out from behind her desk and into the competition.
Grace has a sharp perception and is full of commentary, but ultimately she will either impress the judges and audiences nationally, or potentially receive a quick elimination sending her back to the news room. Once the competition begins, a chance arises to show Grace how the nation perceives her through voting.
Similar to other reality contests, the participants are truly at the mercy of telephone and online voting.
The high profile Casey Anthony case aided in boosting Grace’s ratings and presence in the media despite her already notable impact in the realm of commentators due to her typical persistence for answers while interviewing; as well as her strong dedication to her self-developed theories on a case.
Grace has not always been correct or fair in her statements. Viewers may not agree with her ideas, but she has become a household name, and the reality show may give her the resources to continue her climb to the top one shimmy at a time.
Perhaps this show will lead to the “star” status that the show promotes.
