Four festivals to heal your SXSWithdrawls

With South by Southwest a few weeks behind us, it is natural for Austinites to assume that there will be fewer things to do in the coming months before the summer and fall festival seasons come around.

However, the month of April is filled with several exciting events that should keep things exciting and serve as nice diversions while homework piles up. Here are some of our selections for the must-attend events this month:

AUSTIN JEWISH FILM FESTIVAL

April 9-15 | Regal Arbor Cinema and City Lights Georgetown

While Texas may not be the epitome of the country’s Jewish population, the Jewish community of Austin still has a sizable presence.

The Austin Jewish Film Festival, in its ninth year, “challenges conventional perspectives on complex and dynamic issues facing the Jewish people and the world community” through the medium of cinema, according to the festival’s website.

Screening 17 features  and four shorts, ranging from documentaries about Israel’s homosexual renaissance (“Gay Days”) to a semi-biographical account of Allen Ginsberg writing his landmark poem (“Howl,” starring James Franco), the festival looks to make good on its promises.

AUSTIN REGGAE FESTIVAL

April 15-17 | Auditorium Shores

More commonly known as Marley Fest, the Austin Reggae Festival is an annual gathering that brings the Rasta to Austin. This year’s installment will feature a dozen groups that will make that Bob Marley poster on your wall smile. Acts include headliners Tribal Seeds, Taj Weekes, Israel Vibration and The Roots Radics Band. With day tickets ranging from $12.50 to $15, including a portion of which will benefit Capital Area Food Bank, you can do a lot worse than lie down on a blanket with a few friends and listen to reggae music all day.

AUSTIN PSYCH FEST

April 29-May 1 | Seaholm Power Plant

Featuring heavily reverberated guitars, plenty of odd sounds and enough noise to give your eardrums a workout, Austin Psych Fest returns for its fourth installment this year in its most ambitious effort yet. Taking over the legendary Seaholm Power Plant for a full three days, The Reverberation Appreciation Society and Austin’s own psych ambassadors, The Black Angels, will pay respect to the sound that is just as important to Austin’s musical history as country or folk. This year’s stacked lineup features Austin icon Roky Erickson, the Omar Rodriguez-Lopez Group, Atlas Sound and Black Moth Super Rainbow, in addition to The Black Angels.

Dozens of other mind-expanding bands and artists will be featured as well. Psych Fest has continued to expand itself with each passing year proving that 2011 may be the turning point where it will break out as the Austin music festival to go to between South by Southwest and Austin City Limits.

EEYORE’S BIRTHDAY PARTY

April 30 | Pease Park

Arguably one of the country’s most popular events dedicated to a chronically depressed donkey, Eeyore’s Birthday Party has been an Austin staple since its genesis in 1963.

Known for festival goers’ eccentric costumes and a multitude of drum circles, the all-day party attracts everyone from curious families to people who think they’re still in the Summer of Love.

The festival is a showcase for local bands, food and beverage vendors as well as non-profit organizations.
