Get happy: drinks for the rest of the week
Sometimes, drinking on the weekend can take a serious toll on your wallet, which makes drinking during the week a little bit tougher. Here are some cheap nightly specials to keep you going.
Sunday: Kung Fu Saloon
All Day Happy Hour free video games/build your own Bloody Mary bar/$1 mimosas from 2-5 p.m.
Many sects of the Christian faith consider Sunday to be a day of rest, worship and fellowship. But, for many college students, Sunday is used for something much less holy. It has become a day of recovery, hangovers and putting off homework, and the Kung Fu Saloon is the perfect place to end the weekend.
Instead of drinking H.E.B. Quench and watching old episodes of Beverly Hills 90210 next Sunday when you wake up from a long weekend of partying, head over to the Kung Fu Saloon for $1 mimosas and a build your own Bloody Mary bar to soften the blow of your previous night’s alcohol-induced exploits.
The bar is packed with vintage ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s arcade games and on Sundays all the games are on the house. That’s right, you can save your quarters for the laundry and still enjoy classics like Centipede, Moon Patrol and NFL Blitz 2000.
Monday: Lamberts Downtown BBQ
All Day Happy Hour $2 off all booze/half-price bar food
Lamberts is easily the classiest bar on the list, but let’s be honest — it wasn’t too difficult of a task to accomplish. The semi-swanky downtown restaurant and bar serves some of the fanciest BBQ in the state of Texas and some very classy mixed drinks.
The all-day Monday happy hour gets you $2 off all booze as well as, and, this is key, half-priced bar food. This isn’t everyday bar food, either. Lamberts offers incredible honey and sambal crispy boar ribs or a plate of broiled gulf oysters for just $6, and any fan of frito pies would be a fool not to try Lamberts spin on the southwestern classic.
Forget the boring old frito and chili recipe you grew up with, Lamberts mixes your favorite corn chips with chopped beef, fresh pico de gallo, crumbled goat cheese and Lamberts’ own house queso. Pair that with a can of Pearl and the company of a few good friends and you’ve got yourself a great start to any week.
Tuesday: 04 Lounge
All Night $2 wells
The 04 Lounge is the exact opposite of Lamberts. If you want to enjoy this South Austin dive bar, you’re going to need to leave your class at the door.
You aren’t going to find a lot of fancy mixed drinks or a good wine selection, but you will find cheap booze. Tuesday night $2 wells and a location within walking distance makes The 04 Lounge an essential tool in the cheap drinker’s utility belt.
Dingy, dirty and dark are three of the first words that come to mind when describing the South Austin dive, but don’t let the dark imagery scare you, as The 04 Lounge is home to some of the nicest, most interesting bar regulars in the state of Texas.
The bar has a few pool tables and dart boards for drinkers looking for physical activities, but all the real action happens at the bar and out on the patio. Booths, benches and picnic tables fill the rest of the bar and often host a huge variety of eclectic-looking patrons.
Wednesday: Black Sheep Lodge
All Day $1 White Trash cans (Lone Star and PBR Tallboys, Schlitz, etc.)/$4 Deep Eddy sweet tea vodka
While the term “white trash” might be not be one of the most endearing terms to describe people, the term can be a very helpful descriptor when looking for cheap beer. The Black Sheep Lounge regularly serves up typical conventional bar food like friend pickles, hot dogs, chili and some of Austin’s best burgers. But, on Tuesdays the South Lamar restaurant sells cold, crisp and delicious 16-ounce Lone Star and Pabst Blue Ribbon tallboys.
The inside of Black Sheep is filled with tons of TVs playing any and every sports event that you could possibly want to watch, big picnic tables that are perfect for accommodating larger groups, and bar games like darts and shuffle board.
The bar also has a patio with additional seating in the front that overlooks the bustle of South Lamar. Recently, the bar added a large cover over the patio that will make sitting outside a little more desirable as the heat increases in the summer months.
Thursday: Shakespeare’s Austin Pub
All Night $5 liquor pitchers
Sometimes you need to start the weekend early, and Shakespeare’s on Thursday nights is the perfect place and time to start an early weekend. Shakespeare’s is home to multiple dance floors, lots of booze, plenty of eager dance partners and, on Thursdays, $5 pitchers of liquor mixed drinks.
Now, just to clear things up, we’re not talking the big 60-ounce pitchers that bars serve beer in. The mixed drinks are served in large mugs shaped like pitchers, but are still a great deal for anyone clubbing on a budget.
