Hilltoppers compete over spring break

Men’s Tennis

After a less-than-perfect start to their season, the men’s tennis team has turned around and won its past four matches.

As of March 7, the tennis team’s record was 4-5. Now the squad is 8-5, first in conference and as of March 21 ranked 14th in the nation.

After a Battle of the Saints win against St. Mary’s University two weeks ago, men’s tennis began its spring break with an 8-1 victory over East Central University. The next day the team went on to defeat No. 10 Abilene Christian, 5-4.

In its latest match on March 20, the team swept conference rival Newman University, 9-0.

Along with the spring break wins, freshman James Rogers was named Heartland Conference Player of the Week for March 7-13.

Women’s Tennis

Although women’s tennis has an overall record of 6-8, the team is currently first in the Heartland Conference with a 2-0 conference record.

The team started its season with six straight losses, but has since come back and won six out of its past eight matches.

Over spring break, the women beat East Central University 7-1. Then, after a big 8-1 loss to No. 6 Abilene Christian, the women came back to upset conference rival Newman University 7-2.

Men’s Baseball

After sweeping conference rival Panhandle State University and run-ruling cross-town rival Concordia Texas, Hilltopper baseball was upset by conference rival Texas A&M International.

During the first game of the series, the Hilltoppers had trouble keeping up with the Dustdevils’ high scoring in the beginning but pulled ahead in the sixth inning. The Dustdevils, however, continued scoring big, defeating the Hilltoppers 19-18.

The Hilltoppers came back in the next game, winning 12-9, but lost the series-deciding third game 3-4. The Hilltoppers are now 13-9 overall and 10-5 in conference play.

The Hilltoppers will play at Arkansas Fort Smith this weekend.

Softball

The softball team had a successful spring break, sweeping two conference rivals in two consecutive weekends: University of Texas Permian Basin and Panhandle State.

These were the team’s first conference games of the season.

The softball team’s record is currently 18-13 overall and 6-0 in conference. As of March 21, the Hilltoppers were tied for first place in conference with Texas A&M International.

This weekend the team will head to Wichita Falls for the South Central Region Crossover Tournament at Midwestern State University.
