Embrace the pumpkin: ways to enjoy autumn’s signature food

Pumpkins

Pumpkins

The symbol that not only embraces the spirit of the Halloween holiday but is also consistently seen throughout the fall season is the pumpkin. One cup of this orange-skinned vegetable is thirty calories of sweet deliciousness. The pumpkin can be dated back several centuries and still remains popular today.

There are endless amount of things that one can do with a pumpkin to embrace the holiday and season spirit. Here are a few:

1. Pumpkin Spice Latte (PSL)

Need to warm up from the cold air? One can grab a PSL from the nearest Starbucks Coffee shop or even home-make one via an Internet recipe.

2. Jack-o-lantern

One can go out, buy a pumpkin and a carving kit for a reasonable price and make the ultimate jack-o-lantern to embrace Halloween. There are millions of shapes and designs that can be created on this “canvas.”

3. Roasting Seeds

Finished carving the pumpkin? Not sure what to do with all those seeds? In just 20 minutes, those babies can be roasted and eaten.

4. Pumpkin Beer

Not much of a carver? More of a relaxing type of person? Need to sit back and sip on some beer? There are several pumpkin ales available around Austin for you to enjoy.

5. Pink Pumpkin

Pink pumpkins were discovered accidentally by an Arizona farmer and are now being used to raise awareness for breast cancer. For every pink pumpkin that is bought, the percentage of the proceeds go to breast cancer research. The Pink Pumpkin Patch Foundation is overseeing this operation. People can go out and buy a pink pumpkin and embrace the holiday and season, all while helping make a difference.

Beyond these things, there is much more people can do with pumpkins. You can make pies, pancakes, muffins or you can visit a local pumpkin patch. Whatever it may be, embrace the holiday and season spirit while you still can.
